Dave and Kim Winans have been talking to Pickering Energy Solutions for several years about a solar PV installation for their cabin in Pleasants County, WV. They wanted a solar system which would offset their energy use (and provide payback for the investment) while providing a battery-backup for their cabin. The cabin has a generator for emergency power, so the solar PV system would need to be integrated into the power system while recognizing the ability of the generator to pick up load as long as it is available.
PES designed a hybrid power system which would provide the energy export features of a grid-tied system while providing an emergency backup battery power supply which was powered by solar energy. For this system we used the Outback Power integrated power system (like we use in Africa) with the power export features found in American products. This made for a robust, low impact solution and will provide years of reliable, renewable energy for their ‘second home’.
